The Primary Researcher

The primary researcher in the Oregon State Prison Study was a man by the name of Dr. Carl Heller.Dr. Heller was a well known researcher in the field of endocrinology. Dr. Heller was the main researcher in the Oregon State Prison Study. The research done by Dr. Heller was largely due to a rivalry among Heller and one of his students named C. Alvin Paulsen. Paulsen began the experiments at a prison in Washington and this lead to Dr. Heller to begin his testing of the Oregon State Prison Subjects.(Steele 1994)

Time Period of the Study
Dr. Carl Heller began conducting the experiments on the Oregon State Prisoners in 1963 and ended the experiments around January of 1973.(Steele 1994)

Who were the participants? The study participants consisted of inmates from the Oregon State Penitentiary. In the span of about a decade 64 prisoners were tested on in the Oregon State Prison Study. The prisoners were used because they were considered ideal. They were healthy, they were adults, and most importantly they were males. (Steele 1994)

Methods The 64 men were made to lay with their faces flat down on a table with their testicles still exposed. The researchers then exposed the men's testicles to varying amounts of radiation. The amounts varied from 7 to 380 rems. The purpose of this was to see at what does of radiation the men would no longer be fertile. (Steele 1994)

Results Some of the sperm of the men died at 15 rems. At a does of 50 rems all of the sperm died but returned at a faster rate than when the men received a higher does. The highest does received was 380 rems. Only two of the men tested received such a high does of radiation and for these two men it took almost 500 days for their sperm to return. Overall it was found that the higher the radiation received the longer it took for the sperm to return and the more sperm were killed off. (Steele 1994)
